PCV is anxiously awaiting the magnificent wardrobe (by Colleen Atwood) for Charlize Theron as Queen Ravenna in the upcoming Snow White and the Huntsman out tomorrow!!!
One of Pop Culture Vulture’s most beloved costume designers, three time Oscar-winner Colleen Atwood (Chicago, Memoirs of a Geisha and Alice in Wonderland) is at it again and this time she seems to have outdone herself. Snow White and the Huntsman’s heroine played by Kristen Stewart will have a hard time outshining her onscreen nemesis, the evil Queen Ravenna played by PCV’s favorite actress Charlize Theron. Atwood, who created more than a 1,000 costumes for the film, says that the Queen’s gowns mirror the progression (or regression) of her mental state. “She comes from kind of a hopeful place, thinking she’s going to be a queen again,” Atwood said of Theron’s character. “Her costumes kind of crumble along with her. They go from light to dark to very dark at the end,” she added. The wedding gown features a collar that Atwood says was inspired by “a skeletal cage.” It’s made out of parchment paper that has been manipulated into a complicated structural shape. Other of her gowns called for hundreds of hand-cut rooster feathers, thousands of iridescent beetle wings from Thailand and one particularly imposing crown. Atwood collaborated with famed jewelry designer Cathy Waterman to create the Queens elaborate crowned jewels. If the trailer (below) is any indication, PCV thinks Theron steals the show for sure!!! Can’t wait to see this film!

More from Cannes: Meet BRIGITTE!!! 2 Songbirds with a serious sense of style—-
Aurelie (Saada) Maggiori & Sylvie Hoarau of the French folk duo Brigitte (founded in 2008) are so intriguing that Pop Culture Vulture had to stalk them the second we saw them land on the red carpet of the Cannes Film Festival yesterday. Turns out they are not only extremely talented folk singers (see the Rouge In Love video they did recently for Lancome if you need some proof) but every single photo we found of them was extremely chic . What’s worse is that they seemingly don’t have to even try!! Upon seeing that huffingtonpost.com had described Aurelie as a “Boho Giselle” and Sylvie as a “hipster Velma from Scooby Doo”, we thought: “damn, they took the words right out of our beak!!!!!! Kaw kaw kaw” We’ll definitely be seeing more from Brigitte in the future… & more from Cannes Fim Festival to come on PCV!! XOXO♥
PRADA presents Roman Polanski Film “A Therapy” starring Ben Kingsley & Helena Bonham Carter at Cannes Film Festival!
The short film (below) follows a Prada-clad Bonham Carter’s character visiting a psychiatrist (played by Kingsley) to discuss a bad dream. The unsympathetic doctor becomes captivated by her purple fur coat & simply can’t resist trying it on before the tagline ‘Prada Suits Everyone’ blows up the screen. The 4 minute ad was screened before Polanski then presented a restored version of his 1979 picture Tess. Also restored and presented in extended version was Sergio Leone’s 1984 classic Once Upon a Time in America. (That latter restoration project was funded by Gucci thanks to its partnership with Martin Scorsese’s Film Foundation). Still up on PCV’s bucket list is to make it to ♥Cannes for the festival. We’ve been parasailing there but the festival is still a pipe dream!
Jenni Radosevich’s I SPY DIY STYLE comes out tomorrow!! Find out how to make all the latest fashion trends YOURSELF! Yipppeeee!
I’ve been a fan of for NYC fashion editor Jenni Radosevich’s blog ispydiy.com since it’s incarnation but now she’s bringing her ideas on DIY style to the coffee table masses via her new tome I Spy DIY Style, which will be available here. The book promises to “Transform your basics into designer fashions. Turn hardware-store finds into statement necklaces or embellishments for a chic dress. Re-create red-carpet-ready looks and add your personal touch. Filled with 30 step-by-step projects (similar to those seen below like PCV fave the cookie cutter wrist/ankle “double cuffs”!!) inspired by celebrities, designer runways, and classic styles as well as tips from fashion insiders such as Rachel Roy, Erin Fetherston, and Rebecca Minkoff!” Pop Culture Vulture will further attest to a constant theme throughout…”Now, why didn’t I think of that?” Even Marthat Stewart sees that Radosevich has a flair for “fixer-upper” fashion!!! XO PCV
Nicholas Kirkwood’s Keith Haring inspired footwear line; a match made fantastical footwear heaven!
Pop Culture Vulture is slightly obsessed with these Keith Haring (♥one of our absolute all-time favorite modern artists) inspired Nicholas Kirkwood shoes!!! The line pulls inspiration from many of Haring’s most prolific imagery such as “Radiant Baby,” “Safe Sex,” and his portrait of Andy Warhol. Says Kirkwood, “I saw so many shapes with Keith Haring’s artwork that I thought could translate in a really beautiful way onto a shoe… The bold colors, defined shapes and edges––that aspect of it, to me, made it perfect for a shoe.” This fabulous collaboration with The Keith Haring Foundation are currently on display at the launch of Kirkwood’s new London boutique but for more on the Iconic Artist visit the Brooklyn Museum for it’s Keith Haring Exhibition on display until July 8. Check out this interesting little video from nowness.com (sponsored by Swarovski) below to see more on Kirkwood’s process in designing footwearing through Haring’s inspiration.
PCV is especially fond of the Swarovski encrusted thigh-high roller skates!! Hopefully the display will head across the pond to Kirkwood’s NYC store front at 807 Washington Street next!! XO PCV
As much as PCV hates to admit it, the trailer for Rock of Ages the movie looks pretty freaking rad!
Okay, PCV has never been shy about admitting our less than stellar opinion of Tom Cruise (at least since he met & married his Stepford wife and jumped on Oprah’s couch) but with a sensational supporting cast that includes ♥Alec Baldwin, Paul Giamatti, Russell Brand, Mary J. Blige, Catherine Zeta Jones & more…. we’re thinking that this adapted film version of the musical Rock of Ages might do just that… ROCK!! The offiicial movie release date is June 1, 2012, but until then you can check out the trailer below. God, as much as we hate to admit it, Tom looks pretty sick in the recent W Magazine! Day-um! Maybe Maverick hasn’t lost his magic?!
The Giant Mechanical Man is a must-see for any romantics out there♥♥!!!
PCV fell in love with this movie that debuted at the Tribeca Film Festival (yes, we’ve been meaning to write about it for a few weeks now but fell behind in our postings). It’s such a sweet little story and you should definitely check it out if you are romantic at heart. As per IMDB, it tells the story of a silver-painted street performer and the soft spoken zoo worker who falls for him. Here’s the trailer, check it out on VOD this month while it’s available or put it in your netflix queue pronto, Tonto!
ps. A fun little tidbit: PCV’s prom date, Sean Gunn, is an actor in this film… but we promise this isn’t why we loved it!! Thanks for humoring us in this trip down memory lane (below)! XO
PCV is über excited for the Metropolitan Museum of Art Costume Institute Benefit celebrating the Opening of Schiaparelli and Prada: Impossible Conversations!!!
Of course working in fashion, Pop Culture Vulture can’t wait for THE biggest East Coast fashion event of the year, the Met Ball, which takes place in a few mere hours!!! This year, the benefit is celebrating the new Schiaparelli and Prada: Impossible Conversations exhibit which will be on view through August. I’m so excited for this exhibit (though few could compare to last year’s McQueen; Savage Beauty which actually broke museum records) we are highly anticipating the new show (see sneak peak in header above). In other Schiaparelli news, we can expect a reboot of the brand who (under the ownership of Diego Della Valle since 2006) will debut it’s first collection in February during Paris Fashion Week!! Ooooh la la! Above, is one of PCV’s favorite Met Ball couples; Tom & Giselle who always look so perfect that it almost makes us want to hate them!!! They never disappoint, anticipation of this “golden couple” in all their glory + fashion’s heaviest hitters at this year’s chic shin-dig has now commenced. UPDATE: click here to see a summary of 2012’s Met Ball bests!!
ps. Below is our favorite Met Ball coupling of.all.time: SJP and the late great Alexander McQueen♥
PCV Tribute to Adam Yauch ♥
We are so saddened by the passing of Adam Yauch (as well as our own Uncle Tom) that we can’t type today so please enjoy this amazing video tribute we saw on youtube. The above art is a watercolor I did back in school. We’ll miss you MCA.
…and Uncle Tom, I wish I was in Texas today for your services—- I’m there in spirit! You are in my heart.
PCV “art crush” Ryan McGinness is opening his “Women: Blacklight Paintings & Sculptures” tonight at the Charles Bank Gallery!!!! Swooooon!!!
CHARLES BANK GALLERY presents Women: Blacklight Painting and Sculptures, a solo exhibition by New York-based artist Ryan McGinness. For the first time in a public exhibition, McGinness is revealing his entire working process for creating the personal visual language that is the hallmark of his artistic style. To best showcase that process, McGinness has created an exhibition in two parts: Uptown, Gering & Lopez Gallery will be showing an all black and white exhibit of McGinness’ sketches and drawings. Downtown, on the Lower East Side, Charles Bank Gallery will be showing the fluorescent blacklight paintings and sculptures that are the finished result. SO cool as is he. He’s talented as well as cute, such a dreamy combo! XOXO PCV
Chloe Sevigny’s cute East Village apartment is featured in this week’s New York Magazine!
PCV loves getting a glimpse into cute NYC apartments… this time care of NYMag! (Maybe at some point we’ll even post a peek into our NYC nest), Check out Chloe Sevigny’s adorable East Village digs. Sevigny, 37, gave the magazine a tour of her 1862 East Village garden co-op, “I like crosses,” she says (she has several on the walls of her digs). “I was raised Catholic … I have an affinity.” Counterbalancing the crosses in her bedroom: a neon pentagram by New York artist Hanna Liden. “I came here with literally no furniture because the place I lived before this was, like, 200 square feet,” she says, and she didn’t exactly have time to decorate. Initially, Sevigny would buy a lamp here and a mirror there from David Cafiero, who runs the tiny by-appointment antiques store Cafiero Select in Cooper Square, and who helped decorate her brother Paul’s club, the ♥Beatrice Inn. “We’re both from New England,” says Sevigny. “He’s really inspired by the sea, and I grew up on the water. I was like, ‘Ahhh. I wish I could just live in his store!’ ”Cafiero had only done a few interiors at the time, but Sevigny liked his proposal for her apartment, which included found objects and refurbished antiques. “It was frugal,” she says. “Frugal Yank.” Or, as Cafiero puts it, “Everything feels like a perfect little sailboat or a really considered Hudson Valley river house from the nineteenth century.” Sevigny adds, “I wanted this to be more glamorous,” she says of her decorating choices. And although Sevigny is on the market for a high-rise – “I’m looking,” she says – she remembers her initial attraction to her co-op. “I walked in and felt transported, like I wasn’t in Manhattan anymore,” she says. “It just felt womb-like.” PCV is especially fond of her Kelly Wearstler 70’s inspired green mod trellis wallpaper!! (so fond, that we will be doing a Kelly Wearslter post pronto, Tonto). Next up for the talented Ms. Sevigny? (aside from chilling in her adorb digs… Did we mention that we are so jelly of her eat-in kitch with adjacent rose garden terrace?) A guest starring role on FX hit, American Horror Story of course!!
PCV is kinda obsessed with Prada’s Parallel Universe by Vahram Muratyan!
How adorable are ♥Vahram Muratyan’s cute little .gifs for PRADA Spring 2012 ?!?! We’re slightly obsessed with these over here at Pop Culture Vulture! “Where two parallel universes meet under the auspices of Prada style.” We first posted about the charming Armenian born Muratyan a few months ago here with the release of his picture book based on his daily blog:Paris versus New York: A Tally of Two Cities. He’s not only amazingly talented but he’s also cute too (see bottom)! *sigh*!! But, we digress, the entire line is SO cute!!! We die for the kitschy vintage-feel clutches!! How cute would they look with your most retro LBD? XO PCV
Isn’t he dreamy?!
Speaking of ice cream with cherries on top, Lisa Perry Jeff Koons Collab + the opening of her new Madison Avenue store with a launch party this Saturday= not to be missed!!!!
Okay, it’s no surprise that Pop Culture Vulture is completely OBSESSED with Jeff Koons. Who doesn’t love a ginormous metallic balloon animal!?!?!? So, of course we would not DARE to miss the store opening of Lisa Perry’s new Madison Ave. digs featuring her Jeff Koons duds! (Her new collaboration with the Pop Art great coincide with the opening!! I die for the cherry dress featuring a print from his work “Loop” featured above). Love the mod vibe in her new store….. get thee to the party!!! Be there or be retangular! XO
PCV ♥s Jeff Koons!
And now for something seriously scrumptious…Anna Barlow’s scintillating ceramics makes PCV want to take a big bite!
I was meandering through NYC’s The Affordable Art Fair this past weekend (yes, been meaning to post this for days now but the week got ahead of me!) and I was so taken by the work of ceramicist Anna Barlow. How yummy are these ice cream sculptures?!? In her own words, “I am fascinated by the way we eat food, especially by the rituals around celebrational or indulgent treats that have developed; the way they are assembled, displayed and then eaten. I am also interested in how food tells a story of the people and place it’s in. A full stand of ice creams could suggest a hot day or treats abandoned for some mysterious reason. The beauty of food left to melt and ooze holds a fascination for me. It is something that is usually over looked and temporary but this can be captured and frozen in time with clay and glaze. I have focused on ice cream as it is such a momentary and yet memorable treat that most of us have experienced and therefore can evoke memories of sensations and tastes, as well as prompt a fantasy of desired indulgences. I am firstly inspired by the materials I use. I find that clay, porcelain and glaze have so many wonderful possibilities and often translate well to represent food. This is the reason why I like to work with the materials’ own properties, for example, the dry translucency of high fired porcelain suits the biscuit texture of wafers and ice cream cones, while the colourful liquidity of a silky opaque earthenware glaze is used to capture the quality of dripping ice cream. I hope to combine these techniques to create a “visual edibility” to my work; it is up to the imagination of the viewers as to how they will taste…” Well, PCV loves her work and it leaves us saying “more please”!
ps. Anna’s work is a bit reminiscent of another PCV favorite: painter ♥♥♥Wayne Thiebaud, below, …proper WT post to follow. We’ve been obsessed with him since our very first visit to the MoMA. (Evoking such yumminess, I don’t think either of these artists are too concerned for PCV’s bikini season which is right around the corner!!!)
