Woop woop! We first wrote about Marant and our love for her high-top sneakers a few years back here. This collection is going to be amaze-balls!! PCV LOVES RED HAND APPAREL—- Born in D.C. * Designed in Detroit * Made in America * & TOTALLY KICK ASS!!!!
A few weeks ago, I was re-acquainted with an old friend from my hometown, Tim Neil, who was in NYC filming a video for a kickstarter campaign for his new, totally rad men’s apparel line, RED HAND. He told me of how his concept was born from necessity when he had been searching for shoelaces that were practical & stylish only to find that they were actually non existent. From there, he expanded to other accessories including but not limited to socks, tees, and belts (with buckles cut/repurposed from the hoods of vintage muscle cars as seen down below, how cool is that?!) all with a keen focus on quality and design… & keeping the line produced right here in the good ol’ U.S. of A. (a philosophy that Saraphia obviously holds very dear to our heart! ♥♥♥)!!! Check out Tim’s awesome kickstarter video below and please support his campaign as there’s only a week left to do so!! here.
I was totally obsessed with Sophie Blackall’s MTA artwork (see post here) that I thought I’d be saddened when I saw a new replacement (see top image), but Marcos Chin really gave her a run for her money!! I LOVE his colorful work! Marcos Chin graduated from the Ontario College of Art and Design, in Toronto, Canada. Since then, his work has appeared on book covers, advertisements, fashion catalogues, magazines, and CD covers. He has received a gold medal from the Society of Illustrators Los Angeles, and has had his work published in numerous award annuals such as Communication Arts and American Illustration. Perhaps the most recognizable work are the illustrations he has done for Lavalife’s international advertising campaign; appearing on subways, billboards, print and online. Marcos has given lectures throughout the US and Canada and currently lives in New York City, where he teaches Fashion Illustration at the School of Visual Arts, a school near and dear to PCV ♥.
Diane von Furstenberg and the Tale of the Empress’s New Clothes!!
PCV has taken a bit of a sabbatical from posting as we are working on our own (top secret) very exciting new book project (yay!!) so we had to come out of seclusion the second we saw that our FAVE lady EVER, Diane von Furstenberg (with Camilla Morton) has just released a new AdorAblé picture book!!! The perfect stocking stuffer for the fashionista on your list, you can find it here.
PCV just took a little field trip over our lunch hour to the Pace Gallery to see the Chuck Close♥♥♥♥ (one of our personal favorite artists of all time) exhibit currently up through December 22. You should definitely check it out!!! As per the exhibit bio, Chuck Close (b. 1940, Monroe, WA) is renowned for his highly inventive techniques of painting the human face, and is best known for his large-scale, photo-based portrait paintings. In 1988, Close was paralyzed following a rare spinal artery collapse; he continues to paint using a brush-holding device strapped to his wrist and forearm. Is he amazing or what?! (I fell in love with him in College.) His practice extends beyond painting to encompass printmaking, photography, and, most recently, tapestries based on Polaroids (see Obama♥ below). Carine Roitfeld accepts position of Global Creative Director for Harper’s Bazaar!!
PCV has been taking a brief hiatus on account of a very exciting new top secret project, BUT we simply had to come out of hiding to rejoice in the news of Carine Roitfeld’s new role at Harper’s Bazaar!! Hearst Magazines has named Ms. Roitfeld to the newly created (just for her?) position of global fashion director for Harper’s Bazaar, a role in that she will collaborate with editors from all 26 international editions of the magazine. Roitfeld plans to continue the her bi-yearly Fashion Book magazine CR (published by Fashion Media Group, the company behind Visionaire and V magazines). Do we think this news has Condé Nast shaking in it’s (Nicholas Kirkwood ankle) boots??

We’re having a “why didn’t we think of that” moment here at PCV. Richard Phillips at the Gagosian Gallery NYC, opening reception tonight from 6-8!!
One of PCV’s favorite artists, ♥ Richard Phillips, is having a special showing at the Gagosian Gallery with an opening reception tonight, September 11th from 6:00-8:00pm. When we can’t determine what art is—when we get to that point where we’re not sure, that’s the strongest likelihood that we’re actually experiencing something great. That’s what the art world is most afraid of, because we don’t know how to assign value, whether it’s cultural or otherwise. In a way the films were meant to be a destabilizing artwork. They exist in another area, a zone where we were free to work.
Phillips was born in Massachusetts in 1962 and lives and works in NYC.
click here for more deets. The above images are not all representative of the newest gallery show, but just a few of PCV’s faves. Kaw kaw kaw. XO
Ian Falconer’s brilliant cover for The New Yorker is ahhh-mazing!
Pop Culture Vulture is slightly obsessed with the most recent cover of The New Yorker featuring an illustration by Ian Falconer. Falconer, perhaps best known for his Caldecott winning children’s book series about a lovable little Pig named Olivia (inspired by the birth of his first niece) has done over 30 covers for the publication. (See above for some of PCV’s absolutes fave)s. Aside from his ubiquitous illustrations, Falconer is also heavily involved with the world of theater design and has worked steadily with the likes of David Hockney and David Sedaris as well as the New York City Ballet. If you haven’t picked up a copy of one of his Olivia books, you should do so, toot sweet!!
PCV loves Mrs. Tependris by Konstantin Kakanias! Check out his new animated short Tependris Rising created with The Pain for LA’s Co!
As per their teaser, “TEPENDRIS RISING is an animated short film from the Los Angeles-based fashion brand, Co. Commissioned to accompany Co’s Fall 2012 collection, the film catches up with artist Konstantin Kakanias’ iconic, fashion-obsessed character Mrs. Tependris. The film was created and illustrated by Kakanias and brought to life by the directing duo The Pain”. This is TOO adorable, and is making PCV yearn to get back into animation!!!
ps. Check out the cameos by fashions heaviest hitters! Anna, Kanye, Grace, Carine & André, to name a few. Too adorb.
While we’re on a fashion illustration kick, check out Danny Roberts latest project, a mural for the Tiffany (NYC flagship)store renovation! Cutest construction site we’ve ever seen!! Here’s more of his work. Amaze balls! Thanks for the inspiration, Danny boy!! XOXO
POP CULTURE VULTURE is obsessed with David Downton & you should be too!!
Check out this month’s issue of Vanity Fair for some absolutely stunning portraits by British artist, David Downton, perhaps one of the greatest Fashion Illustrators of all time. Downtown collaborated with VF for a tribute to some of their “Best-Dressed Hall of Famers” including ♥♥♥Daphne Guinness (PCV fave person EVER), Sofia Coppola, Carolina Herrera, Iman and more! Also featured above are some colorful Downton favorites. His work is stunningly beautiful in its graceful simplicity. PCV has been picking up the water color brushes as of late and we aspire to emulate Downton’s creations!!
ANNA WINTOUR HAS GONE GAGA!!!!!!!! VOGUE’S SEPTEMBER ISSUE COVER ART HAS LEAKED AND IT’S SIMPLY MAD!!!!!
What do you think of the Lady Gaga cover of Vogue for the September issue?? We think someone had hours & hours of fun with photoshop, and with that hair, we feel like Gaga should be sitting on top of our pencil as we write this!! Always one to be on the cutting edge of high fashion, Vogue’s Anna Wintour doesn’t disappoint. We’re just not so sure we think that Gaga’s contorted frame plus the violet/red color combos are very aesthetically pleasing. We do, however, love the beautiful Gaga images from the inside spread (also above). In other breaking Laday Gaga news: her new friend Lindsay Lohan has signed on to perform in her next music video. Can Gaga save LiLo’s floundering acting career?!?! Stay tuned to find out! XO
FAREWELL TO ANNA PIAGGI, THE FASHION WORLD’S MOST COLORFUL MUSE!
The world said goodbye today to it’s most colorful & eclectic fashion muse, Anna Piaggi, the Grandmother of Punk, who passed away in her Milan home at the age of 81. The fashion journalist & editor best known for introducing her “doppie pagine” (double page spreads) to Vogue Italia in 1988 left a major mark on magazine mechanics and an even greater mark on Avant-garde apparel. In 1986, Karl Lagerfeld published his “Fashion Journal” documenting ten years of Piaggi’s outfits through a collection of hundreds of sketches, and the designer counted her amongst his closest friends and most influential muses. A fixture on the runways from NYC to Paris to Milan, Piaggi was still the “belle of the ball”, even with Fahion’s biggest ballers (see photo below with Terry Richardson and PURPLE Magazine’s Olivier Zahm)!! Stated to have owned 2865 ♥dresses (a girl after PCV’s own dress-obsessed heart) RIP, Anna!!! PCV thanks you for making dressing unique, colorful & eclectic in vogue!! XOXO
